PARISH
OF URGLIN OR RUTLAND [united to Grangeforth in 1713, and to
Killerig in 1803].
GRANGE RATH
CHURCHYARD.
[From Lord Walter FitzGerald, V.P.R.S.A.I.]
'This
burial-ground is situated in the middle of a field by the side of the road
leading from Carlow to Tullow, and two miles from the latter.
'It is now surrounded by a stone wall, and quite round in shape; it has
every appearance of occupying a rath, and is surrounded inside the wall
with trees and old thorn-bushes. There is no trace of any church
walls, but the gravestones are numerous in it; the following are a few of
the inscriptions from this place, and if it was not that the whole
burial-ground was breast hight in nettles at present (July), many other
inscriptions might have been copied down. The first inscription is
almost illegible now, having originally been lightly incised':―

Urglin Church was
erected in 1821, by a loan of £700 from the Board of First Fruits.
By the Public Record Office reports, the Register of this Parish appears
to date from 1710 for baptisms, and 1715 for marriages and burials ―
two volumes up to 1877.
The Rev. Thomas BROOKE was incumbent in 1813, for Urglin, Grangeforth and
Killeric, and his name still appears here in 1830.
In 1864 the Rev. Robert WRIGHT, M.A., was rector.
In 1874 the Rev. W.C. BELLINGHAM, A.M., and in 1886 the Rev. Louis
A. F. BARRY, LL.D.
A sum of £700 was given in 1820 for the erection of the church, and £100
in 1800 for a glebe house.
