LINKERSTOWN.

[From Mr. C. J. HOBSON, Carlow.]

'Linkerstown burial-ground is situated a short distance from the road, leading from Tinryland to Milford or Graiguenaspidogue.  Formerly an old road passed this churchyard, part of which still remains.  The burying ground contains the remains of an old building, the eastern able of which has a lancet window of nice design.  In the burying-ground there are quite a number of monuments.  It has been enclosed with a strong stone wall by the Carlow Board of Guardians.'

'To the memory of Edmond NOWLAN late of Park, who departed this life the 12th of March 1796 aged 65 years, Lord have mercy on his soul Amen.
Also to the memory of Bridget NOWLAN wife to Mr. Garret NOWLAN of Linkerstown, who departed this life March 26th 1859, aged 68 years.  Also her son Garret, who departed this life December 15th 1859, aged 39 years.  Also her sons Gerald, Thomas, James, and Edward.
______

"Here lieth Michael NOWLAN and his wife, the Lord have mercy on their souls."

'This little stone is very nicely chiselled out of a limestone block, and is but one foot nine inches in height, and five and a-half inches in width.  There is a headstone to other members of this family adjacent.'
______

"P.M."
'Apparently from the cross depicted on this stone it is one of the oldest monuments within this burying-ground.'
______

"On another stone there is another rude cross, evidently of the same date as the above; they are the only monuments of this particular style in the churchyard.'
_____

"Here lies ye body of Mich. QUIN who died Nov. 1st 1777, aged 40 yrs.  Req. in pace."  [A small headstone.]
