The following details have been transcribed from the Journals titled, "Journal for the Memorials of the Dead"  which can be found at County Carlow Library, Tullow Street, Carlow, Co Carlow IRELAND.

Carlow Parish.

The following extracts (continued from page 7, Vol. V, Part I of the JOURNAL for 1901) are taken from an old copy of the Vestry books of this Parish, formerly in the possession of Wm. Browne-Clayton, Esq., and now, I believe, in the Town Hall, Carlow, with other books, & c., forming what was known as the Jackson collection.

            It will be seen that there are some entries previous to 1675, viz., minutes of a Vestry held 13th October 1669; and also some burials in the church during that year.

     ‘The next meeting dated 4th April 1670 , appointing church- wardens, sidemen, and overseers of the highways; and on the back of this page are a few more entries of burials; but whether they belong to this year or to 1669 does not appear. The first is’: --

     'Next follows the assessment for the year 1669, as given by the Late Mr. Robert Malcolmson in his “Carlow Vestries in the Olden Time” (1870); only he has omitted the sums opposite each name.

‘In the year 1669 the following parishes appear to have been United to Carlow Parish: --- Urglin, Clonmulsk [sic] Clodagh, Killeshen, and Sleaty.’

1680.     ‘The following is under date 13th April 1680 ’:
“3. That the Communion Table be made longer and narrower and the Altar rayled in from side to side and two steps without the rails directly under the length thereof, and the seats within the chancel made longer and narrower, for that there may be [no?] inconvenience for the community to repair for the receiving of the Sacrament.”
‘A French name appears amongst the signatures to the above, viz. John Davellier.’
‘The same year we find £4 10s. paid to Jonathan Watson for two new seats, and removing the Pulpit, and making a seat where It now stands.’

8 Oct.  “At a Vestry held, it was unanimously agreed that every Parishioner who now enjoys a whole or part of a seat shall for the future be unmolested in the possession of it and shall have full power to dispose of his seat, if he pleases to any person within the parish.”

14 July .  “It was unanimously agreed that a Gallery/ be built in the Church to be one and thirty foot long/ from the west end upwards of each side to be 8 foot/ high from the floor below”

From the following entry it would appear as if there were/ two churchyards, and may in some measure account for the/ tombs, &c., now to be seen behind houses, and altogether/ disconnected with the existing churchyard: a road and double/ line of houses actually intervening between the present church-/yard and the place referred to, where the tomb of Mr. Galbraith/ is to be seen.

(This appears to be the first mention of slates.)

Aug. 28.  “The Parishioners of the Parish of Killeshin/ consented to built a Gallery in the sd Church [of/ Carlow] for the use of the Parish, as their free gift,/ Mr Joshua Rossell – Mr Samuel Rossell – are named/ to see it done.”

CARLOW PARISH.

'The following extracts are from a copy of the old Vestry Books of this parish, kindly lent me by Wm. Browne Clayton, Esq., of Brown's Hill, Carlow.  They are contained in three volumes, still in his possession.
'Vol. I contains 94 pages of MS., and begins in 1675, ending in 1715.
'Vol. II begins on 2nd of April, 1716, and ends 29th April, 1746.  This book consists of 90 pages of MS.
Vol. III. This book contains only seven pages of proceedings, from 5th April, 1746, to the 1st June 1750.  The rest of the book is blank.
'The above books are all "folio," or foolscap size.'
We now give the names of the clergy of this parish, so far as we can compete them from the above volumes, and from other sources ; and we intend to give extracts of interest from the Proceedings of the Vestries in future Journals.

'1859.―WILLIAM JOHN PURDON, A.M. Curate H. JOHNSON, 1863.
'1864.―ADAM BETTESWORTH PERRY exchanged with the REVD J. PURDON from Castle Ellis Ferns Diocese.
'1877.―Very Revd WM SMYTH KING A.M. Dean of Leighlin, Canon of St. Patrick/s, appointed Rector.  Curate RODERICK OWEN O'CONNOR, 1885.  WILLIAM EWER RYAN, A.M., 1877.
'Subsequently―The Very Revd JOHN FINLAY Rector of Lorum in this county was appointed Rector of Carlow.  And Dean of Leighlin.'

The Reverend Thomas Weston, the second name in the above list, is described by Dinely in his "Tour in Ireland" as a "Reverend worthy gentleman heretofore a student in the Middle Temple London"―[Malcomson.]
From the "Royal Visitation Book, "Bishop Ram's return for 1615, we find under Carlow:―
"PETER WHITE, Vicar, Curate―Master B.A. Church and chancel in repair.  No books!"

In another part of the same return, under the heading "Vicaria de Caterlogh," we find, "PIERS WHITE a readinge minister, of Irish birth, havinge the English Irish, and Lattin tongues, residinge on some livinge in Munster by Dispensation our of the office of Faculties―value7 sterling."
