The following details have been transcribed from the "Pat Purcell Papers",  which are held in custody by his nephew, Michael Purcell, Carlow, Co Carlow, IRELAND.

1782

COUNTY OF CARLOW TO WITT}

The Examinations of Hannah Jackson of Tullow in said County, Servant Woman.

The said Examinant being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist's & Examinant deposeth that on the twenty seventh day of April last in the morning on opening the back door of her masters, Mr. John Brough's house in Tullow aforesaid and on her going out of said house some small distance she saw Walter Magee and Henry Whaley run out of a back house of her said masters armed with pistoles in their hands making toward the back door of said dwelling house where she the Examinant endeavoured to prevent their getting in, the said Walter Magee presented a pistol at this Examinant and swore he would shoot this Examinant if she attempted to hinder him from getting into said dwelling house, which put this Examinant in very great terror dread and fear of her life and obliged her not to give the said Walter Magee or said Henry Whaley the least opposition, whereupon the said Walter Magee and said Henry Whaley forcibly rushed through the said back door into her said masters dwelling house he being then and there in bed, upon which this Examinant asked them what they were about to do, but they made her no answer, and immediately after two men, more followed them into said house and continued all in the kitchen and hall of said house for some time, and until she alarmed her said master and called him up.

COUNTY OF CARLOW TO WITT

The Examinations of Mary Kersy of Tullow in the County of Carlow Servant to Mr. John Brough of Tullow aforesaid taken before Carbery Hendley Esquire one of his Majesty's Justice of the Peace for said County.

The said Examinant being only sworn on the Holy Evangelists and Examinant say that on or about the Twenty seventh day of April last - Examinant being called up by Hannah Jackson on the morning of said day in her said Masters House in Tullow aforesaid she found Walter Magee and two other men whose names she has since heard are Henry Whaley and Daniel Horahan and in sometime afterwards James Nowland and James Gillespy joined said Magee in her said Masters House and the said Henry Whaley demanded the Key of the Parlour door of said House from this Examinant which Examinant gave the said Whaley whom opened the Parlour door and the said Henry Whaley and said other Persons went into said parlour and remained the for sometime. This Examinant sayth the said Magee told Examinant that he the said Henry Whaley had been for sometime that morning in an Outhouse waiting for an opportunity of getting into her said masters House and that as soon as Hannah Jackson who was then a Servant of the said John Brough's, had opened the door, he the said Walter Magee put a cocked Pistole to the said Hannah Jackson's Breast and then he and said other persons got into said dwelling House and forcibly kept possession thereof fore sometime and threatened to take possession of the Remainder of part of said House until said Master who was above stairs with his family in bed made his appearance.

The Jurors for our Lord the King upon their Oath say and present That Walter Magee of Tullow in the County of Carlow Yeoman Henry Whaley of the same in the said County Yeoman Daniel Horahan of the same in the said County Yeoman James Nowlan of the same in the said County Yeoman James Gillespy of the same in the said County Yeoman on the Twenty Seventh day of April at the Twenty Second year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britains, France s and Irelands King Defender of the Faith and Soforth with Force and Arms that is Say with Swords Sticks and So forth at Tullow in the County of Carlow forcibly unjustly and unlawfully did enter the Dwelling House of John Brough Gentleman with Intent the said John Brough and his Family then and there forcible unlawfully unjustly and injuriously and with Strong hand and with Force and Arms to Expel and putout of the possession of the said Dwelling House to the Great Terror of the said John Brough and also his Family to the evil .. Example of all others in the like Case offending and Contrary to the peace of our said Lord the King his Crown and Dignity.

BE it remembered that the above named Michael Warren, John Haughy & Peter Nowlan
and every of them came before me, one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for
said County, and acknowledged themselves to be indebted to our Sovereign Lord the
King, in the Sums to their Names respectively annexed, that is to say,

The said Michael Warren in the Sum of Forty Pounds sterl.
The said John Haughy in the Sum of Twenty Pounds, Do.
And the said Peter Nowlan in the Sum of Twenty Pounds Do.

THE Condition of the foregoing Recognizance is such, that if the above bounden
Michael Warren shall be and appear in his Proper
Person in open Court at the next Sitting of the General Afsizes
to be held at Carlow in and for said County, and do attend the Court
from Day to Day during the said afsizes and from afsizes
to afsizes to be held for said County, until discharged by the Court,
and answer all such Matters and Things, as shall be objected against him on behalf
of our said Lord the King, by
then the foregoing Recognizance to be Void;  otherwise to remain in full Force and

TULLOW. COUNTY OF CARLOW TO WIT} 

By Gilbert FitzGerald Esq. one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for Carlow.
The Information of Arthur Waters of Killoghternawn in Carlow who being duly Sworn on the Holy Evangelists Deposith and Saith that on the day of the fifteenth of June 1819 on the Fair of Gorsebridge in the County of Kilkenny he was assaulted and most cruelly beaten with Sticks Leaden whips etc. , without any provocation, by Andy Fenlon of Ballyellin in Said county being aided and assisted by Lawrence Doyle of Ballyellin and Michael Ellot, John Kelly and David Doyle all of Ballytigla, James and Andy Troy and Patt Doyle of Drimfea, Archibold and Walter Sly of Carrignafekea all in Said County .
And Arthur Waters further Saith that James Troy , NichlosTroy, Patt Doyle Archibold and Walter Sly aforesaid , threatened and attempted to beat him on several former occasions particularly at the Fair which was held at Myshall in the County aforesaid on the 10th day of May last, where they would have beaten him severely if he had not been saved from them by his friends.

Henry Warren maketh oath that he usually resides at Borris in the town land of Borris, in the Parish of Cloonegoose Barony of Idrone East and County of Carlow

Be it Remembered that the above named Henry Warren came in his proper person before me and acknowledged himself to be indebted unto our Sovereign Lord the King in the sum of ten pounds sterling.

COUNTY CARLOW TO WIT}

The Informations of Jane Burgess Warren of Bagenalstown in said County who being duly sworn and examined saith that on the morning of the 11th Instant Thomas Murphy of Bagenalstown aforesaid carpenter in part of whose House deponant resided did on finding no person in the House but deponant who was confined to Bed and had not been well the week previous bolt and fasten the Doors of said House and then and there assault and ravish this deponant forcibly and against her will altho deponant made all the resistances she could saith the said Thomas Murphy forced his way into deponants Bed on on the said morning and then and there had carnal knowledge of this deponant against the deponants will and consent as aforesaid.

COUNTY OF CARLOW TO WIT}

Taken by C.H. Tuckey, Esq.,  Resident Magistrate in and for said County.

THE EXAMINATIONS of John James Lecky of BallyKealy in the Parish of Fenagh Barony of Forth and County of Carlow aforesaid, Esquire D.L. - who being duly Sworn on the Holy Evangelists and examined, deposeth and saith, that on the morning of the 30th day of November 1846 - I saw a man outside my house at BallyKealy before one o Clock he was knocking with a long Bough at an upper Window he went from said Window after I first saw him and in a short time returned without his coat, I observed Jane Morris a maid who slept in the room above  / let down a quilt which he fastened himself to and was drawn up / he assisting / and entered into the House by the Window I sent immediately for the Police Constable Michael Reynolds came very soon with SubConstable Patrick Reilly. John Furney was under a Bed in said Room and came from under it when Constable Michael Reynolds pushed his Gun with the Bayonet fixed towards where he lay concealed, he had only his shirt on at the time , I fear that unless said person / viz. John Furney / who entered my House at said time and place be bound over in sufficient Sureties to keep the peace and be of good behaviour my person or property will be injured by said John Furney.

COUNTY OF CARLOW TO WIT}

By C. H. Teukey RM Esq., One of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for said County.

THE INFORMATION of Mary Warren Spinster of Carlow Parish of Carlow Barony of Carlow and County of Carlow who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists, deposeth and saith, that on this 7th day of August 1847, I was threatened by Mary Nowlan at Carlow and she threatened to get me murdered on Monday next, I am afraid the said Mary Nowlan will do me bodily harm if she be not bound over to keep the peace as I swore Information's relative to James Hayden who is now dead in Carlow Infirmary.
