Islands in the sea...

Ulko Tammio is an interesting island just off the coast of Finland not far from the Russian ocean territorial line. Its too small a speck to appear as much on this map, but its in the area of the red circle.

For the WW2 fans, it has some strategic significance as it was a strong hold of artillery at one point.

We took a boat there so we could do some camping for the weekend. The island isn't so large, but is forested. It takes a few hours from the mainland, and stops at a few other places. It also seems to be quite popular with people who have their own boats.

really Personally I'm skeptical about this whole "sea" thing, as where I come from this is really more like a big lake

Fairly close to the location that the boat drops you off, you can find some remnants of the gun placements from WW2. There's some bunkers to be found just away from this location too, but really not much is marked or signed, so it requires a little searching.

Actually I am a little concerned about the place, as nothing is protected, perhaps its because I come from a place where there's lots of ratbags who would damage things, but it seems that this history is just lying around with nothing there to protect it from vandals

camping spot we set up in a small cove to the south of the island, on top of a rock with a good view.

Summertime sunsets and sunrises here take ages to happen but this means that you get to see the beauty for a long time.
On our trip out, I had spotted a large dual mast jib rig ship in the distance. It was north of our position, and seemed to be heading away from us. I hadn't seen it again all day, but next morning found it at anchor just on the other side of the cove.
