Joensuu

Joensuu is a town on the south eastern side of the country. Its reasonably typical university town. There are a number of nice buildings around the town. The architecture is a mixture of almost Russian style and some Swedish (which can easily be confirmed by looking at a map ;-)

looking back from the lake Joensuu is (like so many towns in this part of Finland) on a lake, so there is opportunity if you know someone with a boat to go out and see the place from that perspective. You can see the hospital up there on the 'hill'. Someone told me that they were worried during the war that it would make for an easy target for Russian bombers.

While out on the lake there is some chance you can catch some fish too. I don't really like most of the fish that are caught in the lakes, though the really small ones are nice fried with breadcrumbs and butter.

I can't think of much more to say about the place, except that its nice to live there, although its a little more expensive than other towns. I expect that the University population of younger people keeps it higher in rent than other areas.
